چکیده

Eighteen years after an infrared excess was discovered associated with the white dwarf G29-38, we report ground-based measurements (JHKsKL N ) with mJy-level sensitivity of GD 362 that show it to be a second single white dwarf with an infrared excess. As a first approximation, the excess around GD 362, which amounts to ∼3% of the total stellar luminosity, can be explained by emission from a passive, flat, opaque dust disk that lies within the Roche radius of the white dwarf. The dust may have been produced by the tidal disruption of a large parent body such as an asteroid. Accretion from this circumstellar disk could account for the remarkably high abundance of metals in the star’s photosphere. Subject headings: circumstellar matter – asteroids – stars, white dwarfs

Ja n 20 07 Infrared Emission from the Dusty Disk Orbiting GD 362 , An Externally - Polluted White Dwarf

We report Spitzer Space Telescope photometry between 3.6 µm and 24 µm and spectroscopy between 5 µm and 15 µm of GD 362, a white dwarf with an effective temperature near 10,000 K that displays a remarkably high concentration of metals in its photosphere and a thermal infrared excess. We approximately reproduce both the infrared continuum and the very strong 10 µm silicate emission feature with ...

Direct Distance Measurement to the Dusty White Dwarf GD 362 1

We present trigonometric parallax observations of GD 362 obtained over seven epochs using the MDM 2.4m Hiltner Telescope. The existence of a dust disk around this possibly massive white dwarf makes it an interesting target for parallax observations. The measured parallax for GD 362 places it at a distance of 50.6 −3.1 pc, which implies that its radius and mass are ≈ 0.0106R⊙ and 0.71M⊙, respect...

Evidence for a Merger of Binary White Dwarfs : the Case of Gd 362

GD 362 is a massive white dwarf with a spectrum suggesting a H–rich atmosphere which also shows very high abundances of Ca, Mg, Fe and other metals. However, for pure H–atmospheres the diffusion timescales are so short that very extreme assumptions have to be made to account for the observed abundances of metals. The most favored hypothesis is that the metals are accreted from either a dusty di...

X-ray and Infrared Observations of Two Externally-polluted White Dwarfs

With XMM-Newton and the Spitzer Space Telescope, we obtain upper bounds to the X-ray fluxes from G29-38 and GD 362, and the 70 μm flux from G29-38. These data provide indirect evidence that G29-38 is accreting from a tidally disrupted asteroid: it is neither accreting large amounts of hydrogen and helium nor is its surrounding dusty disk being replenished from a reservoir of cold grains experie...

Excess Infrared Radiation from the Massive Daz White Dwarf GD 362: A Debris Disk?

We report the discovery of excess K-band radiation from the massive DAZ white dwarf star GD 362. Combining infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations, we show that the excess radiation cannot be explained by a stellar or substellar companion, and is likely to be caused by a debris disk. This would be only the second such system known, discovered 18 years after G29-38, the only single w...
